I visited the first round of the A. G. Sunderland Cup 2008/9 which took place at Wigginton Primary School in York. This turned out to be a great venue but also a lucky one for Wakefield Juniors who came first this time in only our second season.

The Deputy President of the Yorkshire Chess Association Peter Cloudsdale teaches chess at the school and some of these pupils took part in the event.

I was wondering about the relationship between Headteachers and Chess Teachers whilst looking through my photos to put on the YCA web site and came across the following which may shed some light on my curiosity.

Yes Mrs Boyle seems to have a lethal karate chop that Peter has got used to ducking out of the way of.

A game which some club members might find interesting was sent to me earlier this week by Matthew Parsons of Huddersfield Chess Club. He was on the Black side of a Ruy Lopez against Greg Eagleton in this year’s Huddersfield Chess Club Summer Competition. The notes are provided by the winner

At the Doncaster Major 2008 which took place over the weekend I managed to score 3.5  points. Not from playing good chess but from having good fortune. Take the following position from round three. I was playing with the Black pieces and was totally outplayed from the opening by Robert Clegg of Huddersfield who had played a very good English Attack against my feeble attempt at a Nadjorf. I had played so badly that in the position below Robert went straight for the kill with 18.Nd5? As the diagram suggests the simple 18. Qb6 was winning.

I was already a pawn down with no compensation and a losing position. The blunder which Robert played allowed me to turn the tables with the counter sac 18...Nd3!

I was even luckier in my fourth round game against Ken McIntosh from Sheffield. I was already in a lost position with the Black pieces again at move 18 when I play a blunder which allows White a quick win. I’m sure you can see it immediately or in a few minutes. I blundered with 18...Bg5+?? in the position below

Ken had used up an enormous amount of time to reach this winning position which was fortunate for me because he played 19.Kc2?! quickly. He is still in a winning position but only having about 10 mins to reach move 42 makes things difficult. He could have won immediately with 19. Nxg5!

I hope that if I play better at my next congress that my opponents will not be as lucky as I was at this one.

Peter Shaw v Matthew Webb  This game was played on the top board in the last round of the Open Section of the 1st Bradford Rapidplay held at the Bradford Latvian Club on the 6th of May. Matthew was on 4 out of 4 and peter was on 3 out of 4

Peter Shaw v Almar Kaid  This game was played on the top board, in the Woodhouse Cup Match, Wakefield A v Sheffield A, on the 3rd of February 2007. Almar Kaid was graded 211 ECF at the time and was Peter’s biggest scalp at this time.

GM Murray Chandler v Mike Denison  Simul at Batsford’s Chess Roadshow, Leeds around March 1984

GM Jonathan Speelman v Mike Denison  Simul at Batsford’s Chess Roadshow, Leeds on the 22nd of February 1984. Another instructive miniature from Mike. This Batsford Chess Roadshow was held at Greenheads Bookshop with GM Speelman score:  Won 50  Drawn 4  Lost 5 of which 2 of these were to Mike.

Greg Eagleton v Pete Shaw  This game was played in the first round of the Huddersfield Open 2007. Peter has annotated it extensively, but it is a very exciting game and worthy of the study.

Leo Keely v Patrick Senior  This game was played in the Watkinson section of the Huddersfield Evening League, Chartist v Holme Valley. It is my first, and probably last, ever win against Leo.

Mike Denison v Luke Mcshane This is another miniature by Mr D against a famous British Grandmaster to be. This game was played at Dundee in 1993. GM Luke Mcshane was born in 1984 so you can work out how old Luke was when this game was played

Mike Denison v Stewart Haslinger  Played at Norwich 1994

After my recent allocation of good fortune at the Doncaster Chess Congress (see left column) you would think there would be none left for me at the 6th Huddersfield Chess Congress which took place over the weekend.

This was not the case though! I had extremely good fortune in my first game in the second round with the Black pieces against Matthew Parsons of Huddersfield.

In the position above Matthew has just played 18.e5! which gives him a good position. I should have played 18...Bc8 which would limit the damage and keep some equality. However, as is usual in this column, something goes wrong around move 18 (see left column). This time I played the blunder 18...f5? thinking I could sacrifice the h pawn for extra tempi to attack on the Queenside. After the moves 19.Ng5+ Ke7 20.Nxh7 Rbc8 21.h5 gxh5 22Qe2 dxc3 23.bxc3 b4 24. Qxh5 White is in a winning position. If you play through the game you will see that this was not the only time Matthew was winning and my allocation of good fortune was plentiful.

Huddersfield Major 2008 round 2

My next two wins were not as complicated and I was not in danger of losing them which was just as well as I should surely have used up my share of good fortune.

In the last round I had the White pieces against Mark Whitehead from Rochdale who was the only other player with 3.5 points out of 4 (I always take a bye in the first round to avoid playing late on Friday night). After Mark’s 5th move he offered me a draw. I can say that this was the only time I have played like a Grandmaster by accepting it. This meant that Mark and I would have a share of first place. If there was a result on board 2 where the only players on 3 points were fighting it out then the winner would also share first place and my share of the prize fund would be reduced.

However good fortune smiled on me yet again with this game ending in a draw. I don’t know whether to look forward to the next Congress or not.

Other Games

Wakefield A’s next opponents in the Woodhouse Cup are Calderdale A. I have found a Woodhouse Cup game between their board 1 player P. Watson and T. Braithwaite which is annotated by the winner

P. Watson (Calderdale) v T. Braithwaite (Rose Forgrove A)

Adams v Nisipeanu  This game was played in the 3rd round of the 3rd M-Tel Masters on the 12th of May 2007. Adams sacrificed a piece on move 13 and went on to win in fine style. Various chess programs evaluated the position after Black’s 12th move as a slight initiative to Black, even including the sacrifice in their calculations. GM Larry Christian thought that the computers were wrong during his live commentary on ICC. See what you think.

Anand v Leko  This game was played on the 23rd of June 2007 at Dortmund, four days ago. It is a main line Ruy Lopez Marshall Gambit which is a favourite defence with some of our members

Carlsen v Pruijssers  Played in the European Club Cup, Turkey, 2007

Houska v Krush  Played at the Mon Roi International 2007 Woman’s Gran Prix Finale

Howell v Mikhalevski  Played at the Canadian Open 2007

Milov v Howell Played at the Canadian Open 2007

Muir v Jones Played in the ETCC 2007

Short v Sokolov  Played in the 4th round of Bosna 2007
